After winning Gold for the United States Women’s Gymnastics team, various news agencies have reported that many black women have criticized 16-year-old Gabby Douglas’s hairstyle, via social media outlets. A couple of the things reportedly said were, “she needs to brush and comb her hair” and “she needs some gel in her hair.”

Why do you think some African American women would make that an issue instead of focusing on her historical accomplishment?
