It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
That was the talk among 700 senior citizens who attended the Area Office on Aging of Northwestern Ohio Inc. Senior Holiday Party on Friday, Dec. 7, at Premier Banquet Center, 4480 Heatherdowns.
Chrys Peterson, an anchor on WTOL, Channel 11, was emcee.
The attendees enjoyed a formal sit-down dinner, entertainment from Toledo jazz singer Nate Gurley, the Manhattan dance Company and a Santa Claus visit.
Billie Johnson, president and CEO of the Area Office on Aging, said this event was to honor and pay tribute to senior citizens.
“Throughout the year, they give so much through volunteering to the Area Office,” Johnson said. “This is a special day to honor them and the local sponsors who help out.
“The seniors love it and they come in from all over.”
Charlesena Smith, who works with the Area Office on Aging, said this was her first Holiday Party.
This was an opportunity for seniors to get away from the daily routine and “be with someone during the holidays,” Smith said.
“Some of us don’t have family,” she said.
Vivian McGee Carroll, who attends the J. Frank Troy Senior Center, 545 Indiana, said she has attended every one of the Area Office holiday parties.
“This is one of the best events for seniors to come together,” McGee Carroll said. “We commend Ms. Johnson. She does an outstanding job. She has been a great supporter of the Troy Center.”
Mary Hood, who attends the Spencer Sharples Senior Nutrition Center, said she also enjoyed the Holiday Party.
“It’s very nice,” Hood said. “It seems to be a bigger crowd to me. This gives us a chance to get out and celebrate the holiday in a comfortable place.”
